If your specific question isn’t addressed here, please check the copyright page or contact me.
Can I share posts from yokai.com on social media?
Yes. As long as you are not doing so in a money-making or business capacity, you are welcome to share content from this site or use one of the images as your profile picture. A link back to yokai.com is always appreciated!
Can I read your stories on my YouTube channel?
If your channel is monetized, then no. If your channel is not monetized, then yes. Keep in mind that to use the artwork you must still get permission from the artist.
Can I write about yōkai in my blog/fanfic/published book?
Yes. As folklore, yōkai are public domain characters. As long as you are not copying text or images directly from this website, you are free to incorporate any of the creatures and stories for whatever purposes you like.
Can I use text and images from yokai.com to make a yōkai-themed RPG?
If you are planning to make money off of your work in any way, then no. If you are releasing your work for free under a similar Creative Commons license, you are free to use the text in your work. To use the artwork in any way you must get explicit permission from the artist. If you are in need of free yōkai images to use in your publication, I recommend searching Wikimedia Commons, where a large number of scans of scrolls and paintings in the public domain are freely available.
Can I use the pictures on this site in my school project?
In most cases, this should be no problem. However, some schools publish student projects and use them for publicity and promotion. In this case, it would be a copyright violation. Please check with your school to understand how they will be using your work before including any images from yokai.com in your project.
Can I translate yokai.com into my own language?
As long as you are releasing your work for free under a similar Creative Commons license, you are free to translate the text of this website. To use the artwork in any way you must get explicit permission from the artist.
Can you add my favorite yōkai to the site?
Ideally I would love to have every yōkai ever thought up on here, but it would take decades to even come close. If you have a yōkai you’d like to see sooner rather than later, the best thing to do is to join my Patreon. Due to the large number of requests I receive, I am currently only accepting yōkai requests from patrons.
